The benefits of Learning New Skills

Time is the most valuable asset and if well utilised can yield great dividends in the future. Dale Carnegie said:“Remember, today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday.” Start to invest in your time today and learn new skills to unlock your potential for a brighter tomorrow.

It doesn’t have to be something you have planned, rather than something you love, you’re passionate about or having a great interest in.

In 2014, I set out to learn public speaking. No one encouraged me or prodded me, I just had an interest. It happended that I have attended a training session earlier and I was fascinated with the trainer and presentation skills. The second day, I approached a toastmasters club and started my journey, despite my work responsibilities and most importantly time challenge; saying I have no time was not an option, I have created one. It is Go time now, Make it work, Fix it, let’s Go.

It was uniquely rewarding for me; it unlocked my potential and made me who I am today. It wasn’t easy at the beginning, however, I was surprised after few months with my capabilities to learn and develop. Acquiring new skills required consistency, discipline and mindset. However the benefits are:

1- You expand your field of knowledge.

Never stop learning! Those who continue to expand their knowledge are the most successful people in their surrounding. No matter how much you think you know, you can always accquire more skills. This can make you stand among others.

2- Growing up at your current work.

Acquiring new skills help to develop a mindset of growth and be more adaptable to the changes happening in your profession and workplace. You will be able to take on new ways of working. See Carol Dweck’s Ted Talk to find out more about developing a growth mindset.

3- To have a better idea what will you do in life.

Itis highly advisable to think about your current and future skills and how this can help you to achieve your career goals and keeps you up to date with advances and changes to open-up opportunities. Without becoming a learning junkie and attending everything possible, it is impossible.

Have an awesome and bright future.
